Gardaí and road safety chiefs have expressed alarm after road deaths increased to 36 this year so far. Eighteen deaths occurred in January and at the time of writing there had already been a further 18 in February. Garda figures reveal that the deaths involved drivers (15), passengers (12), pedestrians (six), motorcyclists (two) and cyclists (one).
