Matipo St in Riccarton has been evacuated while fire crews work to stabilise a container which is hanging over LPG cylinders.
Containers that became stuck hanging over LPG gas cylinders in a Christchurch shipping container yard have been secured and fire crews have left the scene. The situation posed an explosion risk and multiple fire crews rushed to the scene at Matipo St, Riccarton at 8.30am. Residents were evacuated from the surrounding area while fire crews worked with staff at the KiwiRail container yard to stabilise the containers. Two fire crews responded to a call from the yard at 8.30am and a further five crews joined them by 10.30am, attempting to stabilise the hanging container.

Five fire crews and a hazard unit were called out to the KiwiRail container yard on Matipo St in Riccarton, where one container in a stack of shipping containers was not sitting correctly, above some bulk LPG cylinders.
A crane was brought in to stabilise it and Fire and Emergency spokesman Riwai Grace said there has been a safe outcome.
Police evacuated nearby businesses and people were asked to avoid Matipo Street between Princess Street and Wrights Road, but those streets have now reopened.
Worksafe is launching an investigation into the incident.
