Bringing equity outdoors

There are children who were born and raised in the Grand Valley who have never been to Colorado National Monument or camped or fished or hiked Mount Garfield. For those who would ask “why?” when access to public lands is so readily available, the reasons are multi-hued, but mainly socio-economic in nature. Parks passes cost money. Outdoor recreation gear can be specialized and expensive. Transportation to get to a trail head may be hard to come by. It’s intimidating to learn new skills like kayaking or rock climbing without instruction. And so on. There’s no shortage of organizations in this valley whose missions include exposing “underserved” youth to outdoor experiences. Colorado Canyons Association, the Outdoor Wilderness Lab and the Riverside Educational Center are just a few examples. We’re lucky in ways that many communities in Colorado aren’t. Thanks to after-school professionals in valley During the past year, providing safe, enriching and nurturing after-school spaces for K-12 students has been both increasingly challenging and increasingly necessary. Challenging, because of health and safety limitations (including remote learning during portions of 2020) and increased needs for many families including hunger, housing, and the lack of affordable and sufficient child care. Necessary, because all children and youth need safe spaces where caring adults can help them to reach their full potential. This has been especially true during the ongoing pandemic as daily stressors increased for all of us. The week of April 19-23 is National Afterschool Professionals Week, in honor of the many women and men who work to provide safe spaces, academic tutoring, and inclusive communities for students in grades K-12 during the after-school hours.

Masks are still encouraged/requested/required by some businesses or agencies, but the relaxed regulations will soon leaves us with a plethora of colorful and creative obsoletes. A co-worker was quick to suggest a burning party, but the internet is full of fun and practical ideas for reuse such as a hammock for your hamster, a sleep mask or quilting squares (although masks are anything but square).
