Woodbridge’s Riverside Cinema has announced it will reopen on May 17 for a 10-day screening of the Netflix film, The Dig, before being forced to close again for the summer.
Programme manager Neil McGlone said that the closure was being forced on them because their boilers had died on them during lockdown and they need to get them replaced.
“It is particularly frustrating that this should happen now just as we are getting ready to reopen but that’s life – another hurdle for us to jump over. They are more than 40 years old so they had to go sometime but it would have been nice for them to hang on for just a little while longer.”

A one-off special screening of local hit film The Island of Doctor Moron is set to wow fans and raise funds for the local Police and Community Youth Centre.
Local film producers, Chris and Lyn Dockrill are generously donating the proceeds from a special screening of their film to raise funds for PCYC Kempsey and Kempsey Shire Council is proud to sponsor this event as part of their ongoing support for the vital work of the centre.
The high energy musical focuses on the surreal and crazy adventures of a couple stranded on a mysterious south sea island, including its unique scientist Dr Moron who is dedicated to releasing “the beast in us all.”
Neil McGlone, is looking to recruit young programmers to help broaden the films screened at The Riverside
Are you aged between 16-30? Do you love movies? Would you like the opportunity to help programme one of Suffolk’s leading independent cinemas and expand the breadth of the films on offer? If so, then the Riverside Cinema in Woodbridge would be delighted to hear from you.
The Riverside is launching a Young Programmers Initiative to help develop audiences at the Woodbridge venue but to also introduce younger film enthusiasts to the engaging (and sometimes challenging) world of film programming.
The group will be led, at first, by the Riverside’s programme manager Neil McGlone but he said that the venture will be a collaboration. “We want to hear what the new generation of film fans want to see up on the big screen. It will be a genuine dialogue. They will be responsible for programming a defined slot each month.
Back at the New Wolsey, the spring season continued with the launch of the UK tour of Once – again sharing many of the same cast members who were featured in the original 2018 production. Again the re-staging was a huge hit and played to packed houses featuring Emma Lucia as the enigmatically named ‘Girl’ and Daniel Healy as ‘Guy’. It was the perfect, feelgood start to what we assumed would be a marvellously creative year.
