Giant hogweed: Dangerous plant spotted in Bolton

GIANT hogweed is returning alongside Bolton s waterways, with people being urged to stay away from the plant. The invasive plant can be found along the rivers Tonge and Croal, and has been spotted in Leverhulme Parka and Moses Gate Country Park. It can take up to two years to grow, spread up to 100,000 seeds and can reach a height of 18 feet. Contact with the plant can cause severe burns and blisters, which are extremely sensitive to the sun for years, and can cause blindness if it comes into contact with eyes. Chris Banks, a volunteer for Bolton NEWT, reveals how you can identify the plant. He said: It can be easy to misidentify the plant with our native hogweed or cow parsley. As it is part of the carrot family it shares the same traits such as the white umbrella-shaped flower head.

Nine of Bolton s disused and abandoned railway stations

However, in order to progress some railway stations and routes have had to be abandoned. Some local stations were forced to shut for practical and economic reasons. The country was hit hard by the Beeching cuts, when thousands of miles of track and stations were closed in the ‘60s. Some of our readers may still be able to recall stations at Daubhill and Plodder Lane to name a few. Indeed, many of Bolton’s smaller districts also boasted stations. Other routes simply weren t used enough and couldn t handle the competition that the development of trams and cars brought with them.

Green fund cash set to restore parts of Bolton s famous river

The River Croal THE banks of a Bolton river are to be restored and natural flood defences bolstered as part of a £1.8M ‘green recovery’ project. The River Croal is one of the priority projects for the Greater Manchester Environment Fund (GMEF) that will establish a network for nature across the region. The establishment of the fund is also good news for people working in the environment and young people looking for green careers as 37 jobs will be created or safeguarded, including 12 traineeships. The Greater Manchester Environment Fund (GMEF) is being established to deliver the area’s ambition for a ‘clean, carbon-neutral, climate resilient city region with a thriving natural environment’,  by aligning public and philanthropic funding and attracting private investment.
