If fertilizer runs off a farm in southwestern Montana, it could end up traveling more than 3,400 miles through streams and rivers in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Missouri, and then down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, where it might end up contributing to a giant algae-filled dead zone. Plastic trash that lands in a stream in West Virginia might make a similarly long journey around 3,000 miles to the same place.

Amtrak Restoring Service While Missouri Moves to Limit It
As Amtrak moves to restore both state supported regional service and long distance trains to pre-pandemic schedules, the Missouri legislature doesn t seem inclined to pay for twice a day service on the Missouri River Runner which stops in Sedalia and Warrensburg on it s route between Kansas City and St. Louis.
Over the course of the next three weeks Amtrak is restoring most of it s long distance trains to daily service. This week the Texas Eagle, which stops in St. Louis between Chicago and San Antonio / Los Angeles goes back to daily service. Next week the Southwest Chief, which stops in Kansas City on it s route between Chicago and Los Angeles, begins daily service.
When a Raindrop Falls in the US, Where Does It End Up?

Using data from the United States Geological Survey, River Runner visualizes the path taken by a raindrop from its landing spot to its eventual endpoint. Just click on any spot in the US and it maps out the path the drop would take, complete with a satellite fly-through of the route. I spent many happy minutes playing with this, although the endpoint of “Canada” for a raindrop that lands in my Vermont yard was somewhat unsatisfying.
