Three people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an incident in Carlisle on Sunday. Police were called to St Ninians Road at around 11.25pm to a report that two local men, aged 31 and 27, were injured. The 31-year-old man suffered stab wounds. The 27-year-old suffered serious.
A COUNCILLOR has raised concerns about the impact of culverts and manhole covers in recent storm events. Robert Betton, Carlisle City councillor for Botcherby and Harraby North, has raised concerns with the Environment Agency that manhole covers in the area of Warwick Road blew during Storm Christoph last week. He says water is also backing up in culverts in the area. Both issues, say Mr Betton, appear to be exacerbating the flood risk during periods of heavy rain. Mr Betton says he raised the concerns following Storm Ciara last February and that it appears they have not been addressed. The culverts in the area are the responsibility of the Environment Agency, while many - although not all - of the manhole covers are managed by United Utilities.
A CAMPAIGN group has reiterated its flood concerns as a £25m project takes another step forward. Demolition is set to start on part of the existing Sands Centre building in Carlisle to make way for improved facilities. The new Sands Centre building will be set across two storeys and will add 40,000sq ft to the existing build, with the redevelopment offering facilities including a 25m main pool and a 20m learner pool complete with a moveable floor. There will also be improvements to the events hall, a four-court sports hall with a spectator gallery, a 120-station fitness suite, and a spinning studio.
