(WIS) - Two days before Christmas, 35 people were left homeless by an apartment fire in Irmo. The Irmo Fire Department says they faced a horrific scene when they arrived at River Oaks Apartments on Wednesday afternoon. “Our nightmare when we pull up on a fire is having a fire blowing out of the roof on all sides of the building and having people hanging out of windows and that’s exactly what we showed up to,” Operations Chief Sloane Valentino said.

A fire at an Irmo apartment complex on Wednesday was caused by a child playing with fireworks, officials with the Irmo Fire District said Thursday.  The fire destroyed 10 units at River Oak Apartments early Wednesday afternoon, displacing 30 residents and injuring three. The fire started around 1 p.m. at the complex located at 5324 Bush River Rd in St. Andrews, according to the Irmo Fire Department. 

Dozens Displaced By Irmo Apartment Fire

Dec 24, 2020 (Irmo, SC)   Dozens are displaced after an apartment fire in Irmo.  It started around one yesterday afternoon at River Oaks Apartments in the 5300-block of Bush River Road.  Firefighters rescued six people on the second and third floors, and a mother and her children had to jump from a third floor window to get out.  Ten apartment units were damaged, and the Red Cross is helping 35 people find housing.

The fire started around 1 p.m. Wednesday at the River Oaks Apartments in the 5300 block of Bush River Road. That’s near the intersection with St. Andrews Road.
