CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Kayakers and canoers of all ages glided across the water throughout the day on Sunday, racing in the 2021 Rivanna River Race.
Last year was the first and only time the Rivanna River Race has been cancelled due to COVID-19. Now, this year, itâs back. Competitors were eager to return to the water.
Lisa Wittenborn, the Rivanna Conservation Allianceâs Executive Director, said the race is Albemarle Countyâs first special event permitted since the start of the pandemic.

Charlottesville Parks and Rec staff and a couple dozen community and business members came together over the course of a few days to rebuild and improve a damaged Rivanna River access point stairway at Riverview Park.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -
Rivanna RiverFest is back this year, but itâs going to look a little different.
The celebration is now scheduled to go from Saturday, May 1, through Sunday, May 9. Events include a canoe and kayak race, a bird walk at Riverview Park, pop-up educational activities, storm water management project tours, and more.
âWe are excited to include a lot of different types of activities throughout the watershed in partnership with different groups in the community. We hope to see people out there having fun and learning a little bit about the river and what it means to the community,â Rivanna Conservation Alliance Executive Director Lisa Wittenborn said.
