Dollars for Mammograms gets a clinic, helps pay for care costs

Rita Bertler’s first breast tumor appeared in 1999.
Having witnessed her mother battle breast cancer, she knew what was at stake.
“My mother was a breast cancer victim. She had to have a mastectomy,” said Bertler, president and founder of Dollars for Mammograms. “I was scared to death.”
But her fear wasn’t only for her physical health.
“When I had my first breast tumor, I was uninsured,” Bertler said. “I went into a financial arrangement with every one of my providers. You have the anesthesiologist; you have the radiologist; you’ve got the surgeon.”
