Former Harrogate mayor named as new North Yorkshire County Council chairman

Updated Thursday, 6th May 2021, 9:58 am North Yorkshire County Council has chosen former Harrogate mayor councillor Stuart Martin as its new chairman. Councillor Martin, a Conservative who represents Ripon South, stepped down as mayor last week and was today (5 May) appointed as chairman at an annual general meeting of the county council. He will replace Harrogate Harlow councillor Jim Clark who has served an extended two-year term during the pandemic. Speaking at today s meeting, councillor Martin said it was a great honour to be asked to fill the role. He said: I want to thank our outgoing chairman councillor Jim Clark for all of his hard work and dedication to duty over the last two years. You will certainly be a hard act to follow.

New chairman says he is ready to support county s recovery from pandemic

Cllr Stuart Martin, chairman of NYCC NEWLY elected chairman of North Yorkshire County Council Councillor Stuart Martin says he is keen to support businesses, organisations and charities as they emerge out of the coronavirus pandemic. Cllr Martin, a retired firefighter, and grandfather, was elected chairman for the coming 12 months at the annual general meeting of the county council at the online meeting on May 5. He said: “I am looking forward to supporting organisations and charities as much as possible as we open up and I am looking at setting up a chairman’s fund, because so many charities have taken such a hit over the last 18 months.
