Aspen History: Honoring an Olympian

Courtesy Aspen Historical Society “Rip’s Run dedicated on Aspen Mt.,” announced the Aspen Times on December 8, 1983. “Rip’s Run on Aspen Mountain was formally dedicated Saturday in the memory of ski racer Rip McManus, a member of the 1964 US Olympic Team. McManus, a familiar Aspen figure who spent much of his time here ever since he spent a winter living and training in Aspen as a member of the US Ski Team, died a year ago in a car accident on the East Coast. Saturday’s ceremony marked the renaming of Midnight Cutoff (which runs from the bottom of Dipsy Doodle) in McManus’ memory. The two-week string of cold snowy weather broke briefly and the sun shone as a crowd of more than 200 people listened to brief speeches from Ski Magazine publisher George Bauer and Aspen Ski Club president John Keleher.” This image shows seven former Olympic ski racers who turned out to honor Rip McManus.
