Laura Torres didn’t plan to study in her hometown of Del Rio. She had gone to the University of South Carolina for a teaching program, but then got pregnant and moved back to the border city of Del Rio in 2018.
She’s determined to continue her education and enrolled at the Rio Grande College, an upper-level branch of Sul Ross State University in West Texas serving the Middle Rio Grande region with satellite campuses.
But it’s been a challenge, she said, and not just as a single mother.

When I began last summer as president of Sul Ross State University which is both my alma mater and my hometown college in Alpine I knew there would be challenges: teaching during COVID, finding ways to increase enrollment and providing more financial aid, to start.
I immediately introduced new ideas to overcome them. My experience is as a lawyer and legislator, and I served for years on the conference committee that balanced multiple Texas state budgets. So, naturally, I started looking at finances.

AUSTIN, Texas Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez has filed a bill concerning Sul Ross State University.
Senate Bill 522 would move Sul Ross and its Rio Grande College from the Texas State University System to the Texas A&M University System. After speaking with the community at length and having thoroughly researched Angelo State University’s vast improvement after joining the Texas Tech University System, moving Sul Ross State University is the right decision for the institution, the students and faculty, and both Alpine and West Texas as a whole, Gutierrez said.
