Review: Root Film is Filled With Lovely Locations & Weak Mysteries Root Film takes players on a lovely tour of the Shimane Prefecture, giving them a glimpse of historical places, customs, and characters as they work to solve grisly mysteries. Unfortunately, the journey is the only compelling thing about this weak visual novel, as its story is somehow told too quickly and the game is filled with things that waste the player’s time. It’s far too drawn-out, yet somehow too short at the same time. Director Rintaro Yagumo has been tapped to work on the “Shimane Mystery Drama Project.” It’s great news, except the same project was shelved ten years ago under strange circumstances. The new one doesn’t seem like it’s going to go any better, what with all of the people dying. Riho, an actress and our other main character, doesn’t seem to be faring much better, with bizarre deaths happening all around her as well. It’s a wonder anyone gets any work done.

Serving as a completely separate entity, outside of being located in the same prefecture, is this mystery visual novel worth diving into? Story Players will find themselves taking on the role of two seperate protagonists, Rintaro Yagumo who goes by a pen name of Max Yagumo after winning a film competition years prior, and an up and coming actress simply known by her stage name, Riho. Share: While it might not be as compelling as its predecessor, Root Letter, Kadokawa Games’ follow-up visual novel Root Film is still worthy of your time. You’ll visit a bevy of locations and witness the culture of Shimane Prefecture while trying to solve an ever-increasing number of murders. As the title of the game suggests, it places a much greater emphasis on film and the craftsmanship that goes into it. Each of your two protagonists are intimately connected to the medium; Rintaro Yagumo is a little-known director looking for his big break, and Riho is an up-and-coming actress. Each of them possesses the skill dubbed synesthesia which allows the characters to memorise noteworthy clues to use in vocal sparring matches that conclude each chapter.
