Ferndale s Ringwald Theatre, a mainstay of metro Detroit s LGBTQ arts community for much of the 21st century, will reopen this fall after shutting its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The performance space, formerly located on Woodward near 9 Mile Road, will head across the street to partner with Affirmations LGBTQ+ Community Center at 290 W. Nine Mile. We opened our doors initially in 2007, said Ringwald artistic director Joe Bailey. Before then, there were some shows here and there that appealed primarily to the LGBTQ community, but it was important that (we) tell a lot of those stories. Also, I really wanted to delve into the fun stuff, the parodies and camp and drag. Our first show made a splash. We were immediately embraced, and that really established us within the region as far as offering entertainment you couldn t find elsewhere.
