The two officers and an assistant deputy warden failed to properly make their rounds of a housing unit on Rikers Island on Sunday when 44-year-old Curtis Davis died behind bars, Department of Correction sources said Tuesday.
Edgardo Mejias, 39, was found unconscious and unresponsive in the Anna M. Kross Center and declared dead about 5 p.m. Sunday, Correction Department officials said.
Brown water at the 44-year-old Kross Center is another example of what advocates describe as inhumane conditions in city jails. In August, the Board of Correction documented crumbling facilities, flooded housing areas, outdoor rec yards taken over by weeds growing through cracked concrete, and feces-stained floors.
Michael Nieves, 40, cut his throat at Rikers’ Anna M. Kross Center, said sources. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he lingered on life support until he died Tuesday. Correction Commissioner Louis Molina said he ordered three officers involved suspended immediately after a preliminary investigation.
