Hundreds of businesses sign on to support LGBTQ rights legislation

© Getty Images Hundreds of companies have signed on to a coalition in support of the Equality Act, a sweeping civil rights bill that increases protections for LGBTQ people in areas including education, housing and employment. The Human Rights Campaign announced in a statement that 416 companies, including dozens of Fortune 500 companies, have signed on to its Business Coalition for the Equality Act. According to the organization, the companies collectively employ more than 14.6 million people in the U.S. Of the large companies that joined the alliance are Apple, PepsiCo, General Motors, CVS, Facebook, Marriott, Capital One, Starbucks and Home Depot. Alabama, state hosting 2022 World Games, passes anti-transgender sports bill

Tuesday, 27 April 2021 Alabama, the state due to host the World Games in Birmingham next year, has passed a bill banning transgender youth from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity. Governor Kay Ivey signed the bill, which prohibits competition between those of different biological sex unless a mixed competition, into law on Friday (April 23). Known as House Bill 391 (HB 391), it states Schools, public K-12, athletic events allowing competition by one biological gender against another prohibited unless the event specifically includes both genders . Although the terminology used is both genders , it is believed this would refer to sex - meaning transgender girls who are regarded as biologically male and transgender boys who are regarded as biologically female would have to play in competition aligned with the sex they were assigned at birth.

“HB 391 is nothing more than a politically motivated bill designed to discriminate against an already vulnerable population. By signing this legislation, Gov. Ivey is forcefully excluding transgender children. Let’s be clear here: transgender children are children. They deserve the same opportunity to learn valuable skills of teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy competition with their peers,” Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David said in a statement. The Alabama House voted 74-19 for the bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Scott Stadthagen of Hartselle. The Alabama Senate voted 25-5 for the legislation. “I want to thank Governor Ivey for her leadership and for protecting the rights of Alabama’s female athletes. Standing up for what is right is not always easy, but it is always the right thing to do,” Stadthagen said Friday.

Republican governor Kay Ivey signed legislation restricting transgender students from participating in K-12 sports, making Alabama the latest conservative state to ban transgender girls from playing on female sports teams. Ms Ivey’s office announced in an email that she had signed the bill that says a public K-12 school “may never allow a biological male to participate on a female team”. Asked if the governor had a comment on the decision, spokeswoman Gina Maiola said she could confirm the governor signed the bill on Friday but did not elaborate. Supporters of the bill, HB 391, say transgender girls are born bigger and faster and have an unfair advantage in competition.
