Pools Oak Ridge Tennessee lifeguard shortage outdoor civic center

Oakridger A nationwide lifeguard shortage is impacting the hours at pools operated by the city of Oak Ridge. “Due to the lower number of lifeguards this year, there are not enough people to staff both pools for the same hours they were open in previous seasons,” Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Aquatics Manager Vonda Wooten said. The indoor pool at the Civic Center will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Swim lessons are from 9 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m. Open lap is from 12:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Outdoor Pool is open for public swim Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m., Wednesday nights from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Outdoor Pool will also be open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to noon for 100M lap swim.

The regatta, the 2021 Oak Ridge Louisville Cardinal Invitational Regatta, is scheduled on Saturday, March 13, and Sunday, March 14. It’s hosted by the City of Oak Ridge in partnership with the Oak Ridge Rowing Association, a press release said. It’s an invitation-only event, and it will feature elite college women’s rowing teams who will compete in one of the first events of the season, the press release said.

City manager’s contract extended; nearly $183K Oakridger Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson will serve another year as city manager and will get a  $1,000 bonus “for his efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Watson is a city employee rather than an elected official, but he is in charge of running the city’s various departments and often advises Oak Ridge City Council on decisions. He began working in Oak Ridge on Aug. 9, 2010. This extension will extend his contract through Aug. 8, 2023. Watson has been in charge of the various city departments as they have navigated how to adjust for the pandemic. He also contracted the virus himself and recovered, although the report from the city manager evaluation committee doesn’t mention it.
