Statement on BOT’s Decision Regarding Nikole Hannah-Jones’s Appointment As members of the faculty of the Department of English and Comparative Literature, we write to express our alarm about the recent denial of tenure of Nikole Hannah-Jones for an endowed Knight professorship at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Should the UNC Board of Trustees’ decision stand, it has implications that extend far beyond the facts of this case. We address three of those issues below. Our first concern is about shared governance and the belief in the integrity and professionalism of the process that allows us to recruit, hire, and retain world-class scholars, researchers, and writers. Heidi Valadao

Loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend, Heidi Valadao, passed on January 31, 2021 in Crescent City, CA. Heidi was born in Germany on February 9, 1961 and was raised in Eureka, California. Heidi was a proud Tribal Member of the Elk Valley Rancheria (Tolowa), serving on Tribal Council since 2015. Through her passion to help people in need, Heidi helped pave the way for the Tribe’s Emergency Management program and formed the Tribe’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Heidi was married to the love of her life Virgil for 38 years until his passing in July of 2020. She is survived by her son Mathew Valadao (Kelsey), mother Joan Warner, brother Rick Warner (Diane), sister Katherine Figueiredo, nephew Kristiano Figueiredo. Heidi leaves behind numerous friends including Lori (Randy), Christie (Jeff), Phil (Vicky) and many, many more.
