Gallatin talks illegal oil dumping, reminds residents stormwater drains are for water
Gallatin officials are reminding residents that stormwater drains are for water only, not to illegally dump grass, chemicals or used oil, following recent reports of an illegal oil dumping site.
The city’s Stormwater Utility was notified of illegal oil dumping last month in a subdivision northwest of downtown Gallatin.
Officials said a homeowner had poured oil down the storm drain after changing the oil in a car, which was later verified by Stormwater Inspector Rick Roark.
“What many people don’t understand is stormwater drains send water and contaminants to the places where we swim, fish and get our drinking water,” Mayor Paige Brown said. “Polluting our water is unacceptable, and I commend the resident who immediately notified the Stormwater Utility this was going on.”
