And good day, everyone, im Andrea Mitchell in washington with breaking News Coverage of Hurricane Matthew. We have it all covered from the latest forecast to live reports from across the hurricane zone. Nbc ron mott starts us off in the thick of it in Daytona Beach, florida where mandatory evacuations have been ordered. Youve had a rough night there. Reporter it has been a rough night, andrea, good day to you. The word mandatory means Different Things to different people here. While we know a lot of people did, in fact, evacuate their homes and headed to shelters, or out of state even, a lot of people hunkered down where they were. They wanted to be near their property. We wish them well. Authorities wish them well as well. We are still expecting, were in the calm, close to the eye. There is clearing around the eye and it will pick up and get really nasty as it has been the past three hours. I want to step away and show you what were concerned about at this hour and that is the ocean.
largest wildfire in that state s history. there s new trouble churning off the shore. let s bring in hurricane specialist dr. rick nabb from the weather channel. good evening. it s so important for everybody to focus on and prepare for what is forecast to become, not what it is now. it s go being to start moving, and it s going to get stronger than it is now over the northwestern caribbean. the new track forecast from the hurricane center, they have always been forecasting an intensification trend up to landfall in florida. the peak intensity keeps going up. the latest has it peaking at 100 miles an hour. that s category 2. we always have to plan for the possibility of at least a category stronger. could this be a cat 3? that s possible. it s not just a gulf coast of florida issue. inland of the southeast and coastal areas of the southeastern u.s. will be impacted. we have hurricane watches up.
highlights the areas, emergency managers can identify which portions of the evacuation zones need to evacuate and the governors of georgia and south carolina have issued very clear evacuation instructions to their residents and they know who should be going. so listen to those instructions from the emergency managers and evacuate now if you ve been told to do so and you ve been told that there is still time to get out safely. this is the most important thing people can be doing in georgia and south carolina to reduce the loss of a life. hopefully eliminate it completely in those states. rib kn rick knabb at the national hurricane center. at least 130 people according to u.s. officials were killed after the hurricane just moved through the towns and into the remote communities. we have no idea how many people really were affected the death toll could be higher, we heard some really horrific numbers
