roaring. they feel great about it. it s positive. there s great leland: i neither of you guys were going to agree on this one. you knew that. i know you understand when i say i m up against a hard break. we ve got to run. so it s been great. more time next time. we ll see you guys. thank you. kristin: the 97-year-old miss america competition was hoping to rebrand itself in the wake of the me too movement. instead, it finds itself embroiled in controversy with accusations of bullying and calls for the board to resign. rick le leventhal is live in atlantic city with the toughest assignment of the day. reporter: this is not the kind of attention the new miss america leadership was hoping for when it canceled the swimsuit and evening gown portions of the contest. there s been pushback and controversy, much of it fueled by the young lady who currently wears the crown.
including theresa scanlon who spoke about her courage. i found her letter incredibly brave. it s always difficult to speak up when people in power are involved in these situations and she knows full well of course that there may be some backlash or impact against her as the reigning miss america. reporter: a couple of weeks ago gretchen carlson released a statement saying she was surprised and sa saddened beyond words and denied being a bully. we haven t seen or heard from carlson this weekend. she denied our request for an interview today. the miss america canceled the interviews scheduled with contestants that were scheduled yesterday, kristin. so we re going to have to wait until just before 11:00 tonight to see if a new miss america has anything to say about all of this. kristin: rick, i said you had the easiest assignment of the day but it may turn into a tougher one if you stay there for too long. the hurricane is on its way of course. rick, thanks so much. reporter: we ll
devastating consequences. the cdc estimates about 115 americans die each day after overdosing on pain killers, some are now finding healing in an unlikely place. this evening, rick le leventhal reports from kenton county, kentucky. it s gotten to the point now where i m going to get out of here or i m going to die this way. reporter: sam hall is 36 years old and struck sling with addiction. he s struggling with addiction. he s not alone. almost 10 million adult men have alcohol use disorder. my father was an alcoholic when i was young. reporter: research shows children of alcoholics are more likely to become addicted themselves but hall sank even further. it eventually started to hurt to drink. i moved on to ope opiates whichd to heroin. reporter: men not only abuse alcohol at higher rates than women, they re more likely to use almost all types of i ll
home. it s very hard. reporter: the jail s rehab program has become a source of hope for these men stuck in a deadly cycle. we are seeing 71% of our clients who complete do not come back within the first 12 months after being released. when you look at the opposite, those that are not engaged in treatment and programming, 70% are likely to come back. it s exactly flipped. no one has to die. this is preventable. this is treatable. i want to go home and get back to work. reporter: ultimately the goal here is that more men in kentucky will see things the way hall does. things will get better if you try to make them better. it s not easy. anything that s worth doing is not easy at all. jon: rick, thanks. mexican voters head to the polls today in one of the most attention grabbing elections that country has ever held and the results could have a huge impact on u.s./mexico relations
