City councilors on Tuesday voted 4-3 to rezone 8 Highwood St. so the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter could develop apartments for seniors and disabled people with families, and some emergency housing for homeless people, but the vote fell short of the needed supermajority.
Fire Chief Shawn Esler told city councilors Tuesday that there's a need for a third ambulance, explaining that there was a dramatic increase in calls for ambulance service in the first three months of the year as compared to the same period last year.
Officials in both communities sought to close the Ticonic Bridge to traffic, in part to speed up the construction timeline, but Maine Department of Transportation says it plans to keep it open to vehicles.
