Scary morning, at least five suspicious packages picked up, addressed to different politicians and to cnn. Obviously, the intent was to scare. None went off. No one hurt. But a message was certainly sent as the investigation continues, so does our consideration of how to make this better. Jake tapper picks up our coverage now. This is cnn breaking news. Welcome to the lead, im jake tapper. We begin with breaking news in our national lead. The fbi and other Law Enforcement agencies are trying to figure out who sent at least six suspicious packages to a number of highprofile targets, including former President Bill and Hillary Clinton in chappaqua, new york. Former president barack and Michelle Obama in washington, d. C. , former obama Attorney General, eric holder, though it was sent to the wrong address, so it was sent back to the Return Address, which was oddly democratic congresswoman, Debbie Wasserman schultz in sunrise,

wake of the boston marathon bombing. in the wake of this ricin attack. in the wake of mass shootings. the important thing is always to try and bring the country together. to explain to the country, this is what we are doing to keep you safe. this is what we know, importantly, this is what we don t know. but very importantly, the job of the president in a crisis like this, in a situation like this, is to try and bring the country together, to appeal to the better angels of our nature. and that is the type of message that in the past i ve been privileged to be a part of with the former president. lisa monaco, always good to have you on. thank you so much for your time and expertise. i want to bring in cnn law enforcement analyst and former supervisory agent, josh campbell. josh, what will help investigators determine a clear motive right now? so there are a lot of clues here, mike. my dear friend lisa monaco talked about the commonalities. there is another set of commonalities invest
so then say the president shouldn t have said it. so then say the president shouldn t have said it. that s how you get the new decorum. chris chris, here s what the president should do. the president should commend the congressman for reporting his agenda which is what why would you commend a person who did something like that? why would you ever talk about him again? it wasn t the president who body slammed anybody. i know, but he s the one celebrating it, and you can t somehow physically it s like one of those movies where someone is hypnotized and they re not allowed to say words. they can t say them. you can t say trump was wrong. you can t say it. i can t i can t take people who only want to look at one side. i just i just condemned booker in a way that you ve never condemned anyone. let alone trump. look, what about the potential ricin attack on susan collins last week with the envelope mailed to her. what happened at the supreme court. it s all wrong.
i just i just condemned booker in a way that you ve never condemned anyone. let alone trump. look, what about the potential ricin attack on susan collins last week with the envelope mailed to her. what happened at the supreme court. it s all wrong. it s all bad. maxine waters. it is bad, but but your man our president is always at the head of the hate parade. and you know it. but you won t call him out and why would he ever stop? chris, we didn t have the same level of outrage when kirstjen nielsen had to leave a restaurant, when of course. got beat up by don lemon for saying there s a time, place and manner and these people are in a private place and shouldn t be doing this and it s counterproductive. do you think cruz or any of these people are going to get on your side? but you won t say it about trump. you re a smart guy. you can t go near trump. i ll make the it s got to start with trump. i ll make the most blanket statement i can.
these types of people, people inclined to terrorism. the fbi never even got to examining him. congressman, you re a muslim. this concerns you on civil libertarian grounds and other areas. well, i m an american, and i m concerned about national safety, public safety, just like everyone is. but i think it s ineffective law enforcement to go after a particular community. i think what we need to do is look at behavior and follow those leads where they would lead. so, like if tamerlan tsarnaev is evidencing dangerous behavior, by all means, go after him. but once you start saying we re going to dragnet or surveil a community, what you do is you ignore dangerous threats that are not in that community and you go after people who don t have anything to do with it. and so let me just finish up with this one point. and so this ricin attack, for example, that s an act of terrorism. that doesn t come out of the muslim community. we don t have enough law enforcement resources to just go after o
