One year under pandemic: Creativity, resiliency and community at W&M

That same day, William & Mary President Katherine A. Rowe announced that in-person classes were suspended and that the university would move to remote modes of instruction. “We are in wholly new territory and will learn as we go, together,” she said. “For many of us as individuals, there will be disappointments and frustrations. For some, there may be real sacrifices, unexpected challenges or burdens that are hard to see. So I ask that you hold close our core values of belonging and respect. … William & Mary is a resilient community. I have seen this firsthand, particularly in recent weeks. We take care of each other. I am confident that will be the case in the coming days and weeks.”

The building was donated more than 100 years ago to Orlando Johnson, who had a dream of opening a trade school. Johnson College says that Richmond Hall is coming down to make way for a new building. Construction on that building is scheduled to start later this year.

Russell’s role didn’t change, but the demand for his services did.  As the university’s space manager, Russell has created digital floor plans of every space on campus, and his expertise has been critical as the university works to create an environment for students to learn and meet safely under necessary safety and physical distancing guidelines.  “As a William & Mary alumnus, my desire to get students back on campus and to keep them safe really stemmed from the enjoyable experience I had here as a student,” Russell said. “Being able to give students that experience made it easy for me to pivot because I really care for this institution and keeping students and faculty safe.”
