Longtime Norwich University Athletics Director Tony Mariano announced Monday that he will retire in Spring 2022. He will leave after 44 years at Norwich and three decades as Athletics Department leader.
“For over 40 years, Tony Mariano has bled Maroon and Gold, and has provided remarkable leadership in our athletic department,” Norwich University President Dr. Mark Anarumo said. “Tony has been a mentor for our coaches and staff, while creating a family atmosphere that has led to a culture of academic and athletic excellence in our athletic programs. Tony’s passion and unwavering loyalty to our university s mission have been admired by thousands of student-athletes, their families, fans and the entire Norwich community.

Even if the chairs were spaced extra wide at Kreitzberg Arena and Shapiro Fieldhouse on Saturday, the U.S. flag was spread across the stage, the mortarboards and dress uniforms were on and there was enough joy and optimism to fill every sliver of space.

In-person Commencement was grit writ large against the coronavirus pandemic for Norwich University, which had to push last year’s ceremonies online after campus closed for infection curve flattening. President Dr. Mark Anarumo donned his Commencement finery, grand chapeau, flowing maroon robe, NU medallion and all, to lead his first commencement as president.

Professor Donald Wallace, Norwich faculty member for 55 years, honored with naming of Juckett Hall engineering lab
Don Wallace’s reputation preceded him, and succeeded him. The mechanical engineering professor spent 55 years teaching at Norwich University, long enough to coach students who’d meet, wed and send more students his way (their children), sometimes twice over. All who entered Wallace’s classroom abandoned hope of an easy ride; he was exacting.
But as President Dr. Mark Anarumo and Wallace’s colleagues related last month, Wallace was tough out of love and wisdom. He knew the world was taxing and wanted his students, whether they became engineers or not, to handle it and thrive. When he died in November 2018, Wallace left not only a crowd of grateful graduates, but a legacy.
