160th Commencement will be one for the history books

An unprecedented academic year coming to a close brings an unprecedented Commencement for Washington University’s graduating students this week.
To allow for in-person ceremonies during COVID-19, the traditional universitywide ceremony in Brookings Quadrangle will be broken up into eight ceremonies over the next two days, May 20 and 21, on Francis Olympic Field.
Of the more than 3,200 undergraduate, graduate and professional students being conferred degrees tomorrow and Friday, more than 2,540 will be in attendance.

WHAT: Washington University’s 160th Commencement ceremonies. To allow for in-person ceremonies, the traditional universitywide ceremony will be broken up into
eight ceremonies over two days.
The university will bestow degrees on more 3,200 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. More than 2,500 graduating students will attend the ceremonies in person.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will deliver the Commencement address and receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree.
Abdul-Jabbar’s address to the Class of 2021, which will be video recorded in advance to accommodate the multiple ceremonies, will be shown on large screens on Francis Field for those who are attending in person and livestreamed to graduates who are studying remotely during the spring.

Washington University in St. Louis will award six honorary degrees during the university’s Commencement ceremonies, May 20-21.
The university also will bestow academic degrees on approximately 3,200 members of the Class of 2021 during its 160th Commencement.
