Support Maui County charities
By Staff | Apr 16, 2021 It’s a critical time to support Maui Food Bank and charities that help the needy in our county. In a recent mailing, Maui Food Bank explained that there are many hungry children in Maui County who need help right now. “They’re from families who were hit hard by last year’s crisis. Since then, there hasn’t been very much food at home, and hunger has become a heartbreaking new part of their lives,” wrote Maui Food Bank Executive Director Richard Yust. His claim is backed up by a recent study by the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Social Sciences.

Subscribing to Sustainability
For years, Maui resident Jonathan Sherlock watched hundreds of tons of organic material (in the form of kitchen waste) go into landfills. Sherlock decided to divert a portion of that waste into the production of healthy soil and created Ground Up Maui, a subscription-based composting service. Residents and businesses fill five-gallon buckets with scraps, then schedule a regular pickup from their location. Ground Up Maui currently serves the North Shore, Ha‘ikū and Huelo. “My goal is to serve the ‘aina,” says Sherlock.

KAPALUA As a world-class sports event returned to Maui last week with the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions, the Sentry Insurance Foundation announced it donated $250,000 to the Maui Food Bank. The Maui Food Bank is the county’s primary safety net for hunger relief. It’s currently serving 10,000 people each week with emergency food distributions. Since Sentry became title sponsor of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the mutual insurance company spent significant time on the island building relationships with local organizations, talking with local leaders about areas of need and becoming a part of the Maui community.

The Sentry Insurance Foundation announced a $250,000 donation to the Maui Food Bank on Tuesday.
The donation came in conjunction with the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions golf tournament that is set to play Thursday through Sunday at the Kapalua Plantation Course.
“The pandemic has been particularly devastating to Maui’s economy,” Pete McPartland, Sentry chairman of the board, president and CEO, said in a news release. “Unemployment rates here have been some of the highest in the nation. We wanted to help in a meaningful way supporting Maui County families and local businesses.”
