“I don’t know if you remember me,” an art student wrote to Helen Kapp, director of Wakefield Art Gallery, in 1960. “You once purchased a pot cat off me.” Kapp was the doyenne of the Yorkshire art scene at the time, known for acquiring young artists’ work for the Wakefield collection.
This student enclosed a catalogue for his solo exhibition at Skipton Castle. Kapp sent her excuses – the bus trip to Skipton would take a day – but hoped that, when he was home in Bradford, David Hackney (as she misspelled his name) would show her his pictures. Sadly, no trace of Britain’s greatest living painter’s “pot cat” survives.

Capturing art-world and creative figures at home in their living room, at their desks and by their windows, British photographer Joanna Vestey’s portraits are a marker of our strange times. Wearing their masks, her subjects, including Grayson Perry, Jenny Saville and Camille Walala, have been photographed as part of a series to raise money for art therapy charity, AT The Bus.

The AJ 40 under 40 architect is co-founder of east London practice APPARATA, whose House of Artists co-housing block has involved Grayson Perry
‘Experimental structures and collaborations with artists remain important for us to develop ideas for architectural projects,’ says APPARATA of its approach. This can be seen in its most significant project to date, A House for Artists, a new co-housing block in Barking with an unusual angular form. It is due for completion in 2021 and is being championed by artist Grayson Perry.
Astrid Smitham co-founded the small east London-based practice in 2015, after collaborating with partner Nicholas Lobo Brennan on several projects, including a pop-up wooden auditorium in the atrium of Central Saint Martins with artist Richard Wentworth.
