Around one in five employers are planning or considering putting in place a pensions “sidecar” arrangement, allowing employees to divert part of their pension contribution to be used to build an emergency savings pot, according to a Willis Towers Watson (WTW) survey.
Just 1% of those surveyed – 171 organisations across different industries in the UK – already have a pensions sidecar in place.
According to WTW, many employers are accelerating a focus on financial wellbeing in response to the coronavirus pandemic and associated economic impacts.
“There is an appetite to redesign current benefits, and introduce new ones to improve the alignment,” it said in a report on its survey, which was conducted during February and March this year.
So far, DC plans have largely been focused on the onset of auto-enrolment and changes to the regulatory framework - be it the ‘charge cap, ‘pension freedoms or consultations around ‘value for money , says Annabel Tonry, Executive Director at J.P. Morgan Asset Management (JPMAM).Download
In 2015 George Osborne, then the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, decided that those age over 55 could take much more of their pension in cash. This has since opened up a range of possibilities for DC scheme members in the world of pensions.Download

Press Release – Tauranga Half
Kelsi Paige Photography
Today’s Tauranga Half produced two outstanding elite races, with Kyle Smith narrowly holding off Braden Currie in a dramatic finish to win the men’s race, while the women’s race saw Teresa Adam produce a world class performance, to smash the course record by 13 minutes 46 seconds.
The 32nd running of the Tauranga Half drew the best elite fields for many years, and one of the most sensational finishes in the history of the race.
Kyle Smith looked to have the race under control with a 3 minute 20 second lead heading out on the run leg, but after hitting long distance sport’s infamous “wall” around the Mount Maunganui’s base track, had to rely on willpower to hold off a fast finishing Currie, before collapsing over the finish line.
