“Obviously my focus, it’s a little bit different than it was with family and getting married and having kids and stuff.
“But that doesn’t mean that I’m not a competitor. I still love to compete. I love to practice, try to get better and that’s what I try to do all the time.
“So it’s nice to see rounds like one today, because it shows that I’m putting some good work in there and just got to keep doing more of that.”
Sterne is a six-time winner on the European Tour but has not tasted victory since 2013 and missed the majority of last season after wrist surgery.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) Richard Sterne took a one-stroke lead at the Dubai Desert Classic with an 8-under 64 on Thursday in the first round.
The South African rolled in his ninth birdie of the day on his ninth and final hole to move ahead of American rival Kurt Kitayama (65) at the Emirates Golf Club.
Sergio Garcia and Justin Harding (66) were tied for third.
The 39-year-old Sterne, who has battled an array of injuries in his career, last won on the European Tour nearly eight years ago. His only blemish on Thursday was a bogey on the sixth.

(Reuters) – South Africa’s Richard Sterne carded a 64 in the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic to finish at eight under for a one-shot lead at the Emirates Golf Club on Thursday.
Sterne started on the back nine and had five birdies at the turn before he added four more, offset by a bogey at the par-four sixth, to lead American Kurt Kitayama.
Sterne, 39, has not won on the European Tour since 2013 and finished tied for 25th at last week’s Abu Dhabi Championship.
