The multinational company Saint-Gobain, responsible for cleaning up its defunct facility in North Bennington, said waste material would be brought to a landfill permitted to handle hazardous waste. The state’s lone landfill in Coventry is designated for non-hazardous waste.
Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics will conduct PFOA remediation work inside its former North Bennington facility in accordance with a 2019 settlement agreement with the state government.

BENNINGTON â The state Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking public comment through April 2 on a draft plan for reclassifying groundwater in a PFAS (poly-fluoroalkyl substances) contamination zone around two former ChemFab Corp. plants as unsuitable for drinking water.
The proposal is related to the consent agreements the state earlier negotiated with Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics to address PFAS pollution of hundreds of wells by funding extension of municipal water lines to affected properties and covering other costs after widespread contamination was discovered through testing in 2016.
Saint-Gobain also agreed to fund a formal petition to the state, prepared by Barr Engineering, with a detailed proposal for reclassification of the groundwater.
