to this richard singletary in massachusetts. we also remember, by the way, that president obama was a distant cousin of dick cheney and of brad pitt. so at some point, is everyone related? it really depends where your ancestry comes from. the more likelihood you have ancestors that have been in the united states for centuries gives you more of an opportunity. two parents, four grandparents, the number goes back. so probably a lot of people, viewers right now if they have new england connections, they may also be related to scott brown and obama but i think with the separation between the democrats and the republicans, giving them this one common link, if it eases just a little bit of the tension between them, what a wonderful thing that is. let s take a look at the reactions when both men discovered they were related to each other. mr. brown said certainly to have a connection to president obama, i think i can use that in a nice, humorous way. i can say hey, we re family, mr. presi
the new york historic genealogical society. thanks for being here. how did you figure out these two guys were related? well, what happened was i had done the research on martha coakley s genealogy and when scott came forward with the republican win, i decided to contact him on doing his genealogy. he responded by an email from his personal email that night and i started rolling back in december on it. all right. david, let s go ahead and take a look. we ve done the family tree. we ve got some of the stuff for scott brown and go ahead and describe what you found as you shook his family tree. well, i did his genealogy and found that his mother s side is an old new england family with the last name of rugg, r-u-g-g and as i went back, i found the connection that an intermarriage pulled them back to a richard singletary and that s the common ancestor of president obama and so it calculated to make them 10th cousins. so all roads back lead back
