Roman Baber is an Ontario MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament), elected in 2018 to sit as part of Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government. He was kicked out of caucus in January, 2021 after publishing an open letter stating his opposition to Ontario’s continued lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions.
Baber’s Twitter feed contains a riveting 13-second video of Premier Ford, published on March 21, 2021. Apparently unaware that the cameras were rolling, Ford delivers the following blunt comment:
“I’m gonna be very frank. There’s no politician in this country who’s gonna disagree with their chief medical officer. They just aren’t gonna do it. They might as well throw a rope around their neck and jump off a bridge. They’re done. I’m telling you the facts. It’s very simple.”

Ontario’s Progressive Conservative premier, Doug Ford, gets high marks for his handling of the pandemic, is more popular than he was before the pandemic hit, and would handily win another majority government if voters went to the polls today, according to several recent public-opinion surveys.
More likely, however, Ford’s chances for another majority are doomed, mainly because of his economy-killing handling of the pandemic.
Ford can’t be blamed much for his early decision to lock down the province even then-president Donald Trump initially acceded to the urgent demands for lockdowns emanating from the public health establishment. The pandemic has done much to illuminate how groupthink harms the ability to develop a measured response to society’s challenges. The debate around the pandemic response has been remarkably free of nuance, not to mention unadaptable and unreceptive to new information.
Despite the vaccine rollout, lockdowns continue to be the immediate answer to any statistics that might be remotely perceived as a harbinger of catastrophe. Of course, some polls show that swathes of the public support certain lockdown measures; a Maru/Blue poll from early January showed that the majority of Ontarians are in favour of measures such as closing non-essential businesses (80 percent), closing schools (70 percent), and heavy fines for anyone who willfully violates lockdown rules (68 percent).
