St Joseph County increases leaf-pickup subsidies to $425,000; more residents to get discount

Twice as many St. Joseph County residents will be eligible for an âearly-birdâ rate to have their leaves picked up this year, after the county Board of Commissioners agreed to pay an extra $75,000 in customer subsidies to the private vendor running the program. Under a modified contract the commissioners approved Tuesday with St. Joe County Recycling, the first 3,000 residents to subscribe to the program will pay a discounted fee of $99, an increase from the 1,500 subscribers who got that rate for the 2020 season. The contract calls for the county to pay the company a subsidy of $232 for each of the first 1,500 residents to sign up, similar to the previous version of the contract. But the extra $75,000 will allow for subsidies of $50 each for another 1,500 subscribers to receive the early rate.

St Joseph County Council overrides veto; fines for businesses extended

SOUTH BEND â The St. Joseph County Council voted Friday to override a veto from the county commissioners and extend an ordinance that allows fines for some violations of the county s mask order.Â The council voted 7-1 to extend the enforcement mechanism until May 27, with Richard Pfeil joining the councilâs six Democrats in supporting the measure. Republican Mark Telloyan voted against overriding the veto, while Republican Mark Root was not present at the meeting. The ordinance allows for fines to businesses that do not enforce the mask ordinance. The ordinance does not allow individuals to be fined. Council member Joe Canarecci said he was voting to override the veto to protect the individual rights of citizens to conduct their business safely.

St. Joseph County Councilors Send Mask Mandate Extension To Commissioners SOUTH BEND, Ind. Leaders in St. Joseph County have moved a proposal forward to extend a county-wide mask mandate. The County Council voted 7-2 Tuesday night to extend a local mask order to May 27th, after Gov. Eric Holcomb’s statewide mandate expired earlier this month. The council has already extended a local health order on coronavirus. “I believe that holding this for another five weeks and five days, might save at least one life,” said council member Richard Pfeil. “If it were to save at least one life, then I am willing to do the inconvenience of a mask for that period of time.”
