Courtesy Westside Community Group The Save the Westside Community Group hails the city s decision not to move forward with a request for proposals process for the Westside Community Center that deadlocked when the city couldn t reach agreement with one bidder. We are excited to finally reach a point that we can start having dialog with city officials, the group s spokesperson Richard Mee says in an email to the Indy. We look forward to working with the mayor, council members and Parks and Recreation to create a vibrant community center that reflects the specific needs of our Westside community.

Community members concerned about proposed changes to the Westside Community Center

M ore than 100 neighbors gathered May 6 in an attempt to “Save the Westside Community Center,” according to a flyer circulated prior to the event. On Aug. 3, 2020, the city of Colorado Springs announced that the current operator, Woodmen Valley Chapel’s Center for Strategic Ministry, would not be renewing its contract past 2021. Community members at the center listened to a presentation from Richard Mee, who is concerned that a new operator might not maintain the buildings as a community center, or that the existing buildings could be demolished and a new development put in their place. He also claims the process to select a new operator lacks transparency.
