white house for any minute president obama will pardon the national thanksgiving turkey. and the president s holiday plans. we turn to nbc s kristin welker. always a fun time during the year, right, kristin? reporter: it certainly is. i love how the turkey is patiently waiting. this is a time-honored tradition here at the white house. in just a few machines, the president will pardon liberty and peace. they were raised in minnesota. what s interesting, they were raised in minnesota by the minnesota turkey growers association, which got about 100 different submissions for possible names for these birds. a lot of the submissions came from young children. now, these turkeys have a pretty good deal, richard. after the pardoning ceremony, they head to mt. vernon, where
they ll be on display through the holidays, and then they ll get to live out their time there. so it s certainly not a bad gig. it s hard to tell how far back this tradition really goes. some people think it goes all the way back to truman, who potential pardoned a turkey back in 1945, though there are no official documents to really confirm that. the next president we can sort of date back to is john f. kennedy, who apparently spared a turkey in 1963. so a bit of historical context for you there, richard. as for the first family, they will, once in service is over later on this afternoon, they ll participate in a service event together, and then they will really celebrate thanksgiving traditionally here at the white house with family and friends. richard? all right, christian, we ll keep an eye on the turkey there. when the president comes out, we will go back to the picture, look with the two secret service officers perhaps keeping an eye on liberty.
