Illegal Demolition Leaves Neighborhood Hazard

A house at 815B Calle Olivas was demolished without a permit and the debris has not yet been cleared, leaving a public nuisance and encouraging residents to dump other household wastes on the lot.     According to area resident Angie Garcia, the building was demolished about six months ago and little was done to haul off the waste. With the spring winds, trash and other homebuilding debris has been blowing into Garcia and other neighbors’ yards, and into El Llano Road to the south of the lot.     “They came and demolished it and now it seems like nobody cares,” she said.

Ranchitos Homeless Camp Razed

The City of Española’s Departments of Community Services and Planning and Land Use on Tuesday demolished an encampment of homeless people behind Ranchitos Park.     The clean-up was originally scheduled for Feb. 19 but was postponed due to weather. In a Monday interview, Community Services Director Scott Frost said the demolition would take place Wednesday, but it was suddenly re-scheduled to the day prior.     The city has been planning the demolition of the camp, which hosted about two dozen people, for several months after nearby homeowners reported incidents of indecent exposure to children and public drug use by the people staying at the site. The city needed to get permission from Okhay Owingeh, which owns the land.

Credit Union Plan Gets Go-ahead

The City of Española Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted at its Feb. 11 meeting to recommend a plan for a new branch of Del Norte Credit Union at 1720 N Riverside Drive. The recommendation moves the decision to the full city council.     The plan was previously considered at the Jan. 14 Commission meeting, but was tabled following several concerns from commissioners and area residents about storm water drainage and traffic flow.     Representing Del Norte Credit Union, engineer Mike Walla presented revised plans for the construction. A water retention pond will collect excess runoff from the parking lot, with a slow-release drain outflowing to Camino Miramontes in the event of extreme storms that overfill the pond. According to Walla, these drainage plans had been approved by Souder, Miller and Associates, the contracted engineers for the city.

Abiquiú Native Is New City Code Enforcement Officer

Planning and Land Use Director Richard Hubler spoke eagerly about the new hire.     “We are very excited to have her on board. We had a number of good applicants for the job and she absolutely stood out, because of her professionalism, demeanor, and her capacity to work well with our new systems, the technology-based stuff,” Hubler said.     Trujillo is originally from Abiquiú, where she still resides. She graduated from Española Valley High School and is pursuing pre-professional medical studies at UNM Los Alamos.     She was involved with administering the municipal teen court throughout high school and made connections with city staff during that time. She also served two years in the New Mexico National Guard.
