And historically, those interests were dominated from people by the midwest and the heartland states. So illinois, indiana, missouri, my own state of kansas. And the midwest, up through the dakotas. And states in the south where you had members of congress and especially members of the United States who were elected forever. They accumulated great amounts of power, and they were able to influence the political process rather significantly so the states of mississippi, which was one state that had accumulated a large amount of power over the years. [ applause ] one of our great partners at the federal level, assistant secretary of defense dr. Jonathan woodson. Dr. Woodson is leading an effort across the military to stop smoking and tobacco use. We can all agree that deserves some applause. Thank you dr. Woodson. [ applause ] we are pleased the local champions and statewide champions are here today. Its an example of the exciting work under way but work we need to accelerate and continue. Today, we meet at a cross roads. Over the past five decades, we are learned what it will take to end the tobacco epidemic and make the next generation tobacco free. Scientists, researchers and policymakers determined what works and the steps necessary to end the tragic epidemic. The question is, what
Missouri before that was already down to only one clinic that provides abortions in that entire state. And thats a big state. Well today that clinic announced that the state of missouri also appears to be denying them a renewal of their license, which they need to operate in that state. And that means by the end of this week republicans for the first time believe they may have succeeded in one american state in banning abortion. Again, this is this week, the last clinic in missouri may be shutting down. They appear to have achieved an abortion ban in missouri both in law with the new ban just signed by the states governor and also in practice, by closing down this last clinic that the republicancontrolled government there had allowed to operate and stay open. The doctor who operates that last clinic, who believes her clinic may be getting shut down in the next 72 hours, shes going to be our guest here tonight in just a few minutes.
