Its an interesting dichotomy to hear the very uplifting gospel song here at Mother Emanuel Ame Church while also hearing in the background from churches all across the city very solemn bells ringing in memorial for the nine people killed. Almost encapsulating in a way the spirit of the day. Thats exactly right. Its quintessentially christian. Our emblem is a cross which is an instrument of torture and death but also a symbol of hope. When i see all of this i am reminded of what the bible says. We grieve but not as those who have no hope. This white sue prem sist could not harm them because as a christian i believe there is resurrection from the dead hope for the future. Thats what this community is doing. Theyre grieving for the loss. They see it as something that is a true tragedy, but they dont do so without hope.
