It has been reported that the state plans to build a $30 million pedestrian and bicycle bridge across Ala Moana Boulevard in Kakaako, benefiting all the luxury condos and their developers.
But in Kihei, the state is balking at building a pedestrian and bicycle bridge or underpass on Piilani Highway to provide a safe crossing to the new high school.
Saturday’s The Maui News reported, “State’s first 4-lane roundabout to be built.” Department of Transportation Deputy Director for Highways Ed Sniffen said statistics gathered from around the world show that four-lane roundabouts work.
I would say they might work with just vehicles, but when you add pedestrians (students), bicycles and commuter traffic, you will have gridlock, not to mention the difficulty for students and bicycles to safely navigate a four-lane roundabout with multiple crosswalks in many directions. Pedestrians and bicycles need to be kept off a busy highway.
