Why confidence is returning in oilseed rape crops
Why confidence is returning in oilseed rape crops >More in © Tim Scrivener The area drilled to oilseed rape this summer could increase by about 10%, reflecting the sharp rise in rapeseed prices and some greater grower confidence in avoiding cabbage stem flea beetle damage. Oilseed traders forecast that more farmers might be tempted into growing oilseed rape next season, with prices up more than 40% from about 14 months ago at the height of the Covid pandemic. Philip Kimber, commercial grain manager at trader Frontier, expects a rebound in the area this summer, although he says there are still issues to resolve in terms of establishing the crop.

Four OSR growers try different strategies to beat flea beetle
Four OSR growers try different strategies to beat flea beetle >More in © Tim Scrivener Despite its reputation for being a risky and expensive crop option, oilseed rape is currently enjoying better market prices and growing demand – but will that be enough to reverse its decline? In this article, Farmers Weekly speaks to four growers who are making oilseed rape work, but in different ways. All have widened their rotations and prioritised moisture at drilling, but that’s where the similarities end. © Paul Davey Taking a crop break Oilseed rape is being grown for the first time in five years by Paul Davey, after a planned break from the crop.
