Giving Away Money: 2023 Week 12 Picks Against the Spread To Enhance Your Filthy Lucre

Upon Further Review 2023: Defense vs Purdue

Scheduling Note: I apologize for the lateness of this. My prime UFR charting/writing time is on Tuesday but I worked an election (which is a 5am to 10pm commitment plus setup the evening before) this week and only had a quarter charted when it was time to go do that. PSU should be on time. UFR GLOSSARY is here. FORMATION NOTES: More even fronts today than usual, which made the OTs' lives hell but did open up some running lanes inside. Also when Michigan went up to 7 guys with their Split! formation I just called it Split 7 instead of identifying gaps where the LBs lined up. Their other pass-rush formation is this Odd front with a 0-tech nose, two 7-tech DEs, and Harrell a stand-up blitzer that they debuted late against Nebraska. Since nobody has a better name for it I'm calling it Crable, because "Ojemudia at Harrison" is too obscure of a reference. SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Michigan spent the whole game in nickel personnel, treating various backup Purdue TEs/2nd RBs etc.

Best and Worst: Signs

It's a bye week and I had sort of marked this in my mind as a week to just relax and enjoy college football and the nice fall weather, but then gestures wildly at screen happened and so here we are.  There’s still a lot of unknowns and a fair bit of disinformation going on, so I reserve the right to be proven wrong with anything said here and acknowledge that in advance.  I’m willing to take lumps on this but also feel like we’ve got the general contours and shape of the incident fleshed out. Worst:  The Stupidity is the Stupidest Part

Upon Further Review 2023: Offense vs MSU

FORMATION NOTES: MSU was a very basic 4-3 even, as they have been forever. Aside from pass rush exotics, this was the whole game. They would occasionally slide the line to the run strength, and they'd put a nickel on the field for passing downs. They ran a lot of the Dantonio-vintage double-A gap twist blitz from the linebackers; this was about their only gambit on the day. SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Nothing unusual. WR/TE snaps, as per usual: Cornelius Johnson: 50 Roman Wilson: 43 Colston Loveland & AJ Barner: 37 Tyler Morris: 35 Semaj Morgan: 21 Max Bredeson: 9. Morris and Morgan both got a bunch of snaps in Tuttle time. This was a bit of deviation from recent games, where Barner was your #1 snap recipient; my assumption is that Michigan felt like MSU's LB crew was vulnerable to approximately everything when passing and leaned slightly more towards three-wide sets. Only slightly, because Harbaugh. [After THE JUMP: a beatdown]
