Another Supreme Court vacancy, another young woman to fill it.
Gov. Murphy will nominate Rachel Wainer Apter, the director of the Division of Civil Rights, to the seat being vacated by Jaynee LaVecchia, I’ve confirmed. David Wildstein reported it first. The big headline here is that she’s a former clerk for Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose 88th birthday would have been today.
If she s confirmed, Murphy will have placed two women on the court who will be able to serve for 30 years. That’s a long legacy, though I’m not sure whether it really is one. As Gov. Christie’s picks have shown us, state Supreme Court justices don’t necessarily vote the way their nominator would like them to. But if you’re just looking for another reliably liberal vote, this nominee doesn t seem likely to veer right once on the bench.

The endorsements for Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez as New Jersey’s No. 1 federal law enforcement officer are piling up.
Over the weekend, the Police Chiefs Association of Hudson County and the Latino American Democratic Association (LADA) announced their support for the Bayonne native for U.S. Attorney for New Jersey after Craig Carpenito resigned last month.
Suarez, who was a state Superior Court judge before taking over the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in 2015, is one of several people reportedly being considered for the position. When Craig Carpenito took over as U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey nearly three years ago, he brought a reputation as a workmanlike lawyer who would use the high-profile position to focus on the courtroom, not the television cameras.
And that s what he did, slipping past the spotlight as he added more attorneys, boosted the office s production and created special units to deal with violence, opioids and cybercrime, among other things. It was a far different approach from predecessors such as former Gov. Chris Christie, whose boisterous style catapulted him into Drumthwacket just a year after he stepped down as the U.S. attorney in 2008.

I should have known not to write Friday’s top to New Jersey Playbook. Why, after everything we’ve seen so far in the mess that is weed legalization, would I assume the deal wouldn’t collapse at the last minute?
