The Eastern Cape is one of the poorest provinces with a high unemployment rate and a growing number of homeless people. Women and children suffer the most. Desperate homeless people, including mothers and children, scour dumps for food or stand at traffic lights begging. The government’s social grants are not enough and NGOs play a big role in providing food, healthcare and education.
