Palmerston North drag queen Spankie Jackzon speaks about the ups and downs of life as a drag queen and how attitudes toward the LGBTQ community are changing. (First published September 2020) Rouge moved from Melbourne, where there was a flourishing gay and drag scene, to Palmerston North three years ago and was shocked at the lack of events. She wanted that to change, and hoped Palmerston North could be the drag capital of New Zealand. “Palmy is full of unearthed talent bursting to break out and perform. This is just the beginning.” The show would feature local performers as well as some from Wellington and Whanganui.
