Coastal News Today | RI - Ocean State Confronts Environmental Justice Along Its Coast

“Shoreline Access for All: Environmental Justice along the Coast,” a June 30 webinar, the second in a series hosted by the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) and Rhode Island Sea Grant, focused on shoreline access as an environmental-justice issue. The speakers were social scientist Kate Mulvaney of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Julia Twichell, geographic information system and watershed specialist at the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program; and CRMC policy analyst Leah Feldman. Mulvaney presented findings from a study that focused on distributional justice, the sharing of environmental burdens and benefits. The EPA research focused on demographic groups and how access to shoreline amenities differed between them.

PROVIDENCE They are in neighborhoods around Rhode Island, nestled between private homes or obscured by overgrowth. Sometimes nearby property owners try to block them. And sometimes people just don’t know they exist. As the summer approaches, shoreline rights supporters want more people to know more about public rights-of-way how they came to be, and how Rhode Islanders can use them to exercise their constitutionally protected rights. “There are opportunities to get to the shore that are not as traditional as people think,” said Jeffrey Willis, executive director of the Coastal Resources Management Council, a state regulatory agency. “Rights-of-way have their own uniqueness to them. We’d like people to check them out.”

Governor Dan McKee joined Mayor Frank Picozzi, Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit, and commercial quahoggers from the Rhode Island Shellfishermen’s Association to kick off the 5th Annual Rhode Island Quahog Week, which runs May 17 to May 23, shines a light on Rhode Island’s favorite local clam, the hardworking men and women who harvest them, and the vibrant local food industry that makes them available to consumers. As part of the week, participating restaurants and markets will feature quahog-inspired menu items and deals. As part of the kickoff at Warwick’s Town Dock in Apponaug Cove, Governor McKee and Mayor Picozzi signed Quahog Week proclamations.
