HUDSON â Despite challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia and Greene Counties was able to host the Monarch in Our Schools program with 15 classrooms and 3 4-H families in September and October. Monarchs were delivered to classrooms as young caterpillars. Over the course of several weeks students cared for the caterpillars by feeding them plenty of milkweed and ensuring their cages were misted frequently with water.
In a typical year the 4-H Natural Resources Educator, Anna Harrod-McGrew, would deliver caterpillars and materials along with an in-person program introduction to each classroom. While a few in-person programs did take place (in socially distanced and masked settings) most programs were delivered virtually. After delivering the caterpillars to each school Anna was able to speak with the students via Google Meet and zoom.
