Juneteenth celebrations in Knoxville to honor Dr Martin Luther King Jr and commemorate end of slavery

Juneteenth marks the day celebrating the effective end of slavery in the United States. Author: WBIR Staff Updated: 2:31 PM EDT May 27, 2021 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Commission in Knoxville is planning two events to honor him and commemorate the effective end of slavery in the U.S. during Juneteenth celebrations. The MLK Commission will be sponsoring two events, and the theme this year is “A Legacy of Righteous Purpose, Social Justice, and Racial Equality”. The MLK Commission s 2021 Leadership Awards Luncheon will be held on Thursday, June 17 at noon at  the Knoxville Botanical Garden on 2743 Wimpole Avenue. Reverend Dr. William Terry Ladd III, minister at First Baptist Church in Chattanooga, will be the keynote speaker. Face masks and social distancing will be required. The Chattanooga Writers’ Guild s May Workshop Features Poet Laureate Of Knoxville Friday, May 7, 2021 The Chattanooga Writers’ Guild announces the May installment of their Monthly Workshop Series will feature the Poet Laureate of Knoxville.  Titled, Performance Poets - The modern-day Griots, and presented by Rhea Carmon, Poet Laureate of Knoxville, the event will be held on Saturday, May 22 from 10:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m. via Zoom. The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Register at https://chattanoogawritersguild.org/. About the workshop: Spoken word poetry, hip hop and slam all originated from the idea of storytelling.  It has been used as a means of communication, history, activism and encouragement. You can learn a lot about a person by listening to their stories written in a performance style. In this workshop, we will talk about the rhythm and movement of spoken word.

Oak Ridge students to receive awards for artwork & poetry in honor of Oak Ridge 85 More than 100 students created works of art and poems to remember the historic integration of Oak Ridge Public Schools more than 65 years ago. On Thursday, students in Oak Ridge will receive awards for their talent and participation in a district wide art and poetry contest.  From haikus to black and white drawings, their work honors the legacy of the Oak Ridge 85, the first students to integrate a public school system in Tennessee. More than 100 students created works of art and poems to remember the historic integration of Oak Ridge Public Schools more than 65 years ago.
