PHILIPPINE Basketball Association (PBA) teams looking to shore up their rosters by way of the rookie draft will have many to choose from as a record number of aspirants submitted their applications.
As the application deadline set by the league lapsed on Wednesday, a record of 97 players made themselves available for the 2021 Draft proceedings set for March 14.
The number broke the previous record of 91 set in the 2014 rookie draft.
The rookie talent pool includes top collegiate and pro-am standouts and 31 Fil-foreigners who are hoping to barge into Asia’s first play-for-pay league and take their basketball journeys to another level.

The PBA Board of Governors gave the green light Thursday to the staging of another special round for Gilas Pilipinas players in the annual Rookie Draft slated March 14.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio, who attended the afternoon meeting at the PBA Office in Libis as team governor of Meralco, welcomed the league’s approval for the special draft which allows Gilas to tap prospective players for its long-term program.
Panlilio said the Gilas coaching staff will be given the opportunity to look at the list of a record 97 applicants that can be tapped for the program.
THERE will be a special Gilas round in the coming PBA Rookie Draft.
NorthPort team governor Erick Arejola confirmed that the league has agreed to once again allow the national team program to select players from the aspirants pool ahead of the March 14 proceedings.
Speaking on Tuesday s online Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum, the affable executive shared that the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) will have the first dibs on the talent-laden field to replenish the young bloods in the Gilas Pilipinas program. By the end of submission for rookie applicants, we ll find out who Gilas will pick like last year, he said.
